Reflexology

Treatment of the body through the hands and feet has been practised for thousands of years and dates back to ancient Egypt, India, China and Native America. Over time it developed, until the 20th century when pioneers such as William Fitzgerald and Eunice Ingram mapped the points of the feet, resulting in the therapy that we know today as Reflexology.

Reflexology works on the theory that specific areas of the face, hands and feet correspond to different areas within the body. A Reflexologist is trained to recognise differences and inbalances through touch. By stimulating these ‘reflexes’ with gentle pressure, their aim is to help the body restore its balance naturally and assist it in combatting stresses and ill-health.

How does it work?

Reflexology works by dispersing accumulations of calcium and uric acid, stimulating blood and lymph circulation, eliminating waste and releasing tension.

Reflexology, alongside other techniques, can also help to activate the parasympathetic nervous system through encouraging restoratative breath, deep relaxation and sensory stimulation.

What are the benefits?

Reflexology is a therapeutic treatment which can be enjoyed as a single session. However it is most beneficial as a minimum course of 4-6 treatments tailored to your individual needs. Most clients then go on to incorporate regular treatments into their lifestyle.

This ancient and intriguing therapy promotes relaxation and may help ease the symptoms of a number of issues including:

  • The effects of stress
  • Lack of sleep
  • Low energy
  • Digestion disorders
  • Emotional upset
  • Muscular tension
  • Skin complaints
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Immune system disorders
  • PMS and menopausal symptoms
  • Hormonal imbalances

This non-invasive therapy is suitable for all ages.

Reflexology is not intended to diagnose or cure, and should not be used as an alternative to conventional medicine. Instead it can help to support and encourage your body in its own self-healing.

Your personalised Reflexology session.

When we meet, you will be invited to step into a relaxed and comfortable space, where you can be fully at ease. I will discuss your overall health and lifestyle with you, so as to give you a more focused session. There are some medical conditions that would restrict treatment, including deep vein thrombosis, pregnancy during the first 3 months and localised fractures. It is important to inform me of any medical treatment you are receiving so that I can adapt your session accordingly.

For Reflexology on the feet you will then be asked to take off your shoes and socks and sit in a very supportive and comfortable reclining chair. The session will then last for around 60 minutes and will begin with basic relaxation techniques to relieve tension in the feet and prepare them for treatment. I will then apply gentle pressure to points that correspond to different parts of the body. Most clients find the experience very relaxing and beneficial, while many even fall asleep. There can be mild discomfort in areas that have ‘blockages’ and need to be cleared, which I do by working over the area with care. If you need me to adjust the pressure at any point, please just let me know.

Reflexology on the hands can be just as beneficial as the feet, even though it has much less exposure in articles and advertising. It is also a useful alternative for people who cannot have their feet touched for medical or other reasons, and can be applied easily in any setting. Treatments are similar in format, however they will take nearer 50 minutes and you would remain seated upright in the chair. Even though clients are seated for this treatment, they usually find it just as relaxing.

Reflexology on the face works on a similar principal to the hands and feet, but is a very different treatment. I ask that you come to your session with a clean, make-up free face please. Once you are laying back in the reclining chair, I will cleanse your face with a very gentle and pure rose hydrolate. Then using a gentle, nourishing Apricot Kernal facial oil, I will stimulate the Facial Reflexology points with gentle pressure and using additional massage techniques. If you would like them, I can also use some cooling crystal rollers and tools to help improve lymph and blood circulation and reduce puffiness and inflammation.

After treatment, I will advise you to drink plenty of water in order to encourage the release of any toxins.

You can read about the experiences of some of my clients on the testimonials page.
